Through out this article you will see several examples of some images processed using this photo editing software… Let’s first have a look at the flexible interface of C1.
One of the features you will like about Capture One Pro 9 is that it allows you to set up the interface in a way that works and feels comfortable for you. For example the image below shows the browser bar placed to the right which gives the image more screen real estate.
Or if you prefer having the image browser bar at the bottom of your screen you can move it by accessing one of the many handy menu’s.
This is just one of the features that will help you to set up C1 in a way that works best for your work flow. So for example, let’s say you are familiar working with another Photo Editor. Capture One Pro 9 gives you the ability to configure your interface the way you are used to working which will help you make your transition all that much easier.
Here is how the interface looks when you move the browser bar down to the bottom of the screen. I prefer it on the right but you may like it this way.
You may also find the new 3 way color editor very easy to use, you can quickly add a little blue to the shadows and a little yellow to the high-lights in a way that makes it easy for you to visualize. You also have full control over every color in the photo plus you have some handy skin controls that really make the skin come alive.
You will quickly find that C1 will make your images look as if you took them with another camera and lens. Your images will look sharper, your colours brighter and more vivid and even more life like and that also goes for both Portraits and Landscape images.
The image below is a Portrait processed using C1, compared to Lightroom this photo really came alive once I opened it in Capture One software.
I do all of my raw processing and then move to Photoshop for dodging and burning, which reminds me and if you are interested in checking out some step-by-step photo retouching video tutorials.
I will walk you through my work flow inside my Interactive video training area called Image Classroom.
Now back to the software… You may be wondering what makes this Photo editor better than Lightroom and in my opinion it is superior in a couple of key areas.
The number one feature for me is the overall image quality that you get from C1 compared to Lightroom. If you have not already tested out the software for yourself, I suggest you download the free trial.Once you have the software installed do a quick test using the same raw image in both Photo editors…
You may find that the color rendition, dynamic range and sharpness to be of a higher quality then you will see in Lightroom using the same image.
I have a video below that shows a direct comparison between Capture One Pro 9 and Lightroom but I suggest you do your own comparison testing with a few images you are familiar with.
Besides the obvious differences in the look of your images, I also find the live tethered shooting to be a definite plus… From my personal testing shooting tethered to Capture One Pro 9 was twice as fast as shooting tethered to Lightroom.
Of course that will depended slightly on the speed of your computer, your camera and operating system.
If you have ever shot tethered during a Live shoot then you already know load time is a factor… The faster the better in order to keep the natural flow of the shoot. Give this a quick test and let me know if you agree with my findings.
I have also put together a video that walks you through some of the new features of Capture One Pro 9, if you are convinced it is for you. Make sure you use the Capture One Pro 9 Discount Voucher Code: AMBCRAIG.
I’m sure you’ve heard you shouldn’t believe everything you read on the internet so I recommend that you take advantage of the free trial that Phase One the makers of the Photo editing software have available. The image below gives you another look at the interface. From top to bottom you can see they have sliders similar to Lightroom for the Exposure, Contrast, Brightness and Saturation.
Below that are the dynamic range controls which allow you to rein in the high-lights and to bring up the shadows. I find these controls are superior to the ones you will find in Lightroom or adobe camera raw. You also have access to levels and curves from this panel as well.
In closing I just want to remind you to do your own due diligence and test out the software for yourself to see if it fits your current workflow. You should also take advantage of the free 30 day trial. You can access the free trial here.
The image below gives you a closer look at the Adjustment Panel, you can use all of these controls on up to 10 different adjustment layers.

Which is your preferred Photo Editing software? Do you think there are any limitations to the software and if so, what are the biggest obstacles concerning your current photo processing work flow?
Here’s one last shot processed in Capture One Pro notice how it brings out some added sharpness in a subtle way that looks different than the effect you would get with the High Pass filter in Adobe Photoshop cc 2015.
